Consultant or coach?

There are a number of key differences between being a consultant and being a coach which will be explored in this document.

Here is an brief summary:

  • A consultant reviews, considers, concludes and recommends a solution
  • A consultant provides professional advice (tells) and sometimes the service/implementation too
  • A coach asks questions to elicit key information from the client to help the client define their goals and achieve them
  • Through client-focused coaching the coach works with the client to discover appropriate solutions to resolve issues and achieve goals
  • A consultant often does the work (owning the solution), a coach works with the client to get the knowledge and skills into the client’s heart and mind so that they can use it forever (the client then owns the solution).
